Culture Meets Compliance: Course Details


The complete course is three weeks, from April 1 - 19, 2019.

The class is conducted in a learning management system, which places greater responsibility on the learner than other traditional professional development programs. Classes are conducted asynchronously, so there is no single time each week when participants are required to be online. However, participants should commit to spending approximately 3-5 hours on the class each week.

Coursework and assignments for each week open on Monday morning, and should be completed by the following Sunday evening. Grace periods are given, but interaction is more effective when the entire class is working on the same topic. Participants will connect and collaborate with each other through several forms of interactive media, including short videos and discussion boards.

Certificate of Completion

Registrants interested in obtaining a Certificate of Completion for a course must complete the program and earn the Course Completion badge. A certificate will only be issued to a registrant who has earned this badge.

Course Description

Week 1: General Compliance

Get an overview of the general laws that schools must comply with, including employment discrimination laws, I-9 compliance, OSHA and safety standards, document retention and destruction practices, and whistleblower policies. Go beyond the basics of recruitment and hiring and learn requirements and best practices in the application process, effective interviewing and screening, and industry standards for conducting thorough criminal background checks.

Week 2: Leave, Accomodations and Compensation

Evaluate your school’s compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, Fair Labor Standards Act, and related areas. Learn steps to take in response to an employee’s request for leave or need for a reasonable accommodation based on a disability. Take a deep dive into the FMLA, including special rules for instructional employees. Review your school’s pay practices and policies, including proper classification of employees, understanding independent contractors, volunteers and interns, and the proper payment of overtime.

Week 3: Performance Management and Employee Handbooks

Employee handbooks and sound policies lay the foundation for successful employee performance and engagement. In this week of the course, you’ll learn the keys to successful performance management strategies that are both fair to the employee and help schools mitigate risk. Review a handbook checklist and sample policies to consider whether your guidelines comply with the legal requirements, meet standards of best practice, and promote your school’s mission and culture.

Learn to be a good steward of your school's financial resources, regardless of your proximity to the balance sheet, this summer in NBOA's Essentials of School Business for Non-Business Administrators: Budget Meets Mission online course. Specifically designed for school leaders outside of the business office or with limited experience in financial and business functions, the course will teach participants to be strategic in light of financial pressure, and to work more collaboratively with their leadership team around financial issues.
