New Business Officer Institute
October 16, 2008 - Tampa, FL

Today's independent school business officer is expected to be a master of many trades, including financial guru, strategic partner to the Head, and project manager for large construction projects. In this one-day seminar taught by experienced business officers, we will explore the increasingly complex role of the business officer in independent schools and provide a forum to create relationships with peers and mentors that will serve participants long after the end of the Institute. Scheduled topics include financial management and budgeting; enrollment and collections; facilities management; and important relationships.

Campus Safety Seminar
January 9, 2009 - San Diego, CA

Many independent schools continue to struggle with the tension between the open and welcoming culture traditionally fostered by independent schools, and providing a safe and secure campus. While most schools have so-called crisis plans, there are many other opportunities for schools to create safe campuses. This seminar will explore some of those opportunities, such as crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED), a safe schools facilities checklist, mitigation of risk through threat assessments, emergency management protocols, joint incident command, and the all hazards approach to school security.

Environmental Sustainability Seminar
April 21, 2009 - Philadelphia, PA

As fuel and food prices skyrocket and unusual weather patterns continue to occur all over the planet, it is increasingly apparent that environmental sustainability is a critical issue for our nation and the world. Because independent schools have significant human, and sometimes financial, resources, as well as the independence to implement new and creative initiatives, we have the opportunity to take leadership on this issue. Whether you are just starting to consider environmental sustainability or have already begun to make it a part of your school’s culture, this seminar will offer ideas and strategies to help you along. We will cover many aspects of environmental sustainability, including the connection between facilities, mission, and curriculum; ideas to address environmental sustainability without compromising financial sustainability; sustainable dining; carbon emission reduction; and renewable energy and energy management.
