Inaugural Presentation of the Will J. Hancock Unsung Hero Award

The Will J. Hancock Unsung Hero Award had its inaugural presentation to Mr. Will Hancock during the Members Lunch at the 2006 Symposium in Boston. Mr. Hancock announced his retirement after years of dedicated service to NBOA and Independent School Business Officers. Sarah Daignault, NBOA’s Executive Director, presented the award to a surprised Mr. Hancock by saying:

Will Hancock is retiring – again. My premise for this moment is to be brief. Will does not want us to make a fuss over him. But as is normal between us, I am listening, but choosing to do what I want.

How do we describe him? These pictures are a brief snapshot of his life. Family is very important to Will. His own family, his wife – the anchor in Will’s life. But in Will’s view we are all part of his family. He wants to help each of us do our jobs better. He can see the connections in the facts and info swirling around us and can bring them to us in a way that helps us be better. All of the really great parts of the professional development at NBOA are a direct result of his vision, ideas and discoveries as he has gone all over the US and beyond.

How do we honor Will? His focus for NBOA is all the business officers who work so hard in their schools. He has always wanted to recognize them in some way. We have been in the process of unveiling a new award – but we did not have a good name for it – until now! Let me read this inscription:

The Will J. Hancock Award
To recognize those business officers whose work has made a profound difference in their schools just as Will’s work has made a profound difference for NBOA.

It is our pleasure at NBOA to announce our new award, named in honor of our dear friend and colleague Mr. Will J. Hancock.
