NBOA Selects New Executive Director

The NBOA Board is pleased to announce the selection of Jeffrey N. Shields, CAE, as Executive Director of NBOA. Jeff will be only the second person to serve in this role, succeeding founding Executive Director, Sarah Daignault, beginning March 1, 2010. Jeff most recently served as the Senior Vice President & Chief Planning Officer for NACUBO (National Association of College and University Business Officers). He brings an impressive combination of nonprofit leadership and an in-depth knowledge of the issues and concerns of business officers to NBOA.

During a six-month search process, NBOA received over 120 applications for the Executive Director position. These applicants, who came from every region of the country, included heads of schools, association executives, business officers, and others in high-level positions at both independent schools and nonprofit associations. Of these 120 applicants, six were chosen for first-tier interviews. Three finalists were chosen to go through a rigorous interview process with the NBOA Board Search Committee and the entire NBOA staff. Two of these finalists were selected to be interviewed by the NBOA Board.

Jeff was the unanimous and clear choice of everyone who was part of the search process. The NBOA Board is delighted to have identified a chief staff officer who combines a successful track record of leading nonprofit associations with a strong history of working with business officers. As a dynamic, collaborative senior executive with over 12 years of high-level positions in nonprofit associations, Jeff has demonstrated the ability to provide vision and inspire others to enhance organizational capacity, growth, and achievement. He has been recognized by employers, colleagues, and associates as an innovative and results-oriented leader. Jeff’s knowledge of NBOA and his vision for its future impressed the NBOA Board and they are pleased he will lead the association into a new era.

Jeff and Sarah will work closely with each other prior to his official start date and during the first month of his term to ensure a successful transition. Jeff will be based in Washington, DC, and NBOA will continue to be a virtual organization with other staff members located throughout the country.

Jeffrey N. Shields, CAE

Jeff has been employed by the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) for almost ten years and most recently served as the Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer. NACUBO is located in Washington, DC, with 50 full-time staff and an operating budget of $14 million annually. In his role he served as a member of the association’s executive management team and had organizational oversight of strategic and operational planning, member services, marketing, the customer call center, and constituent programming.

Prior to working at NACUBO, Jeff was the Director of Leadership Training & Development for the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). He had oversight of the association’s volunteer leadership development program. He facilitated strategic planning sessions and designed and delivered training programs on the topics of leadership, membership development, and communication skills for the association’s 800+ state and local home builder associations across the country. Jeff also served as a Senior Consultant for Booz-Allen and Hamilton.

Jeff, an active member of the American Society of Association Executives, was recently inducted as a member of the 2008 Class of ASAE Fellows and earned the Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation in 2002. He has also been recognized by the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives (GWSAE) with the “Super Star” award as their active member of the year.

He holds a BA from Shippensburg University and an MA from The Ohio State University.
