Palmer Ball

Palmer formed Palmer Ball Consulting, LLC (www.palmerballconsulting.com), in January, 2016, as she embarked on a new career as a consultant specializing in project work for independent school financial operations. In addition to her consulting work, during Winter / Spring, 2016, along with NBOA, she taught a graduate course on independent school finance at the Klingenstein Institute at Columbia University in New York City. Before starting her consulting career, Palmer served as Business Manager at Spartanburg Day School (Spartanburg, SC) for 21 years, from 1995 to 2016. Prior to that, she was Vice President for Business and Finance at Converse College, her alma mater, for four years, following three years in the College’s Development Office. Before joining Converse, she was in the tax department at Price Waterhouse for two years. During her time at SDS, she coached the middle school and varsity boys’ golf teams, was a guest lecturer for a number of finance classes, and, her favorite – taught the 4K students each year about sea turtles.

Palmer was the recipient of NBOA’s Ken White Award in 2015, served two terms on the NBOA Board of Directors, and was elected to the Association of Business Officers of Independent Schools (ABOIS) in 2008. She served on the faculty of the NBOA Business Officer Institute (BOI) at Harpeth Hall (2016), Providence Day School (2012), Cushing Academy (2007), and Rollins College (2005). She has presented the long range budget model via online classes, webinars, and presentations at a number of national and regional conferences, as well as presentations on data management, college partnerships, etc. She was also very involved in the Palmetto Association of Independent Schools (PAIS) in SC, re-organizing and running the business officer group for a number of years. Recently, she was on the leadership committee that created a consortium of independent colleges and schools in SC and NC to handle 403(b) retirement plan due diligence issues for the members, and served as president of the organization during 2015-16.

Palmer earned a BA in biology from Converse College and an MBA in accounting from the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University.

Mary Kay Markunas

Mary Kay Markunas

Mary Kay Markunas has over 24 years of experience supporting management teams in independent schools and Fortune 100 companies, and currently serves as the Senior Manager, Member Resources and Industry Research, (IL) at NBOA. In this capacity, she manages all of NBOA's research efforts and surveys. Prior to this position, Markunas served as the Director of Finance and Operations at the Avery Coonley School. She holds a BS from Purdue University and an MBA from the University of Michigan.
