In recent years, there has been a slew of new accounting standards, statements, and financial and audit interpretations that affect independent schools. At the same time, schools and other non-profits are facing greater scrutiny and calls for transparency. Is your school meeting the requirements of FIN 47? What about SAS 101 and the related AU 328 and AU 322? Are you concerned about SAS 112? Has your state passed UPMIFA? And now the IRS is changing Form 990 again! This seminar will provide in-depth sessions on the alphabet soup of accounting issues facing independent schools and help to ensure your school meets the changing standards.

Thursday, January 10th

8:00 - 8:30   Continental Breakfast and Registration
8:30 - 10:30   The New Audit Standards: How They Change the Audit
Tom Sneeringer, McGladrey & Pullen
In the last couple of years, the Auditing Standards Board of the AICPA and the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) have issued a number of new statements, interpretations, and staff positions that may affect independent schools, including SAS Nos. 99-114, SFAS Nos. 149-158, and FIN 47-48. Since schools have completed their first audits under SAS 112 and other new standards, the implications of these changes are becoming clearer. This session will review the new standards and help business officers understand what the changes really mean to independent schools. You’ll learn what you should be discussing now with your auditor and Audit Committee, to prepare for these changes, and what you may need to do differently for your next audit.
10:30 - 10:45   Break
10:45 - 12:15   Preparing Interim GAAP Statements
Linda Dennison, NBOA
In the past, many schools have left a significant number of year-end adjustments to the auditors, but now auditors are assessing schools’ competency to prepare interim GAAP statements, and some are requiring schools to prepare the final statements and write the footnotes. This seminar will examine common models for internal financial statements and note the adjustments needed to get to GAAP statements and discuss common footnotes.
12:15 - 1:15   Lunch
1:15 - 2:15   Form 990: Recent Changes and Common Errors
Susan Keller, McGladrey & Pullen
In this session, a tax professional will review the changes made to the Form 990 in 2005, discuss common errors made by independent schools when filing the 990, and, since Form 990s are public documents, provide tips for using the 990 to show your school in the best possible light.
2:15 - 2:30   Break
2:30 - 4:00   Best Practices in Preparing for the Audit and Common Accounting Issues Found on the Audit Trail
Geoff Martiny and Tom Sneeringer, McGladrey & Pullen
The right preparation can reduce the demands on the business officer during audit fieldwork and reduce the number of hours of work required by the auditor, thus helping to manage the fee expense. This session will offer tips and strategies for making the audit experience as painless as possible and will cover common issues found in independent school audits
4:00 - 4:30   Questions and Answers
