Financial Aid 101

Someplace in your long and detailed job description there is an innocuous sounding item called "financial aid". You may not have noticed it or given it much thought when you started. Surprise! It turns out Financial Aid is one of your largest discretionary expenses, impacts your enrollment, the composition of your student body, consumes massive amounts of time and energy--and it can be the best and most rewarding part of your job! This session will review & discuss core issues of Financial Aid administration. Topics will include: goal/purpose, equity/fairness, prioritization, expectations--what families expect from your school--what your school expects from families, documentation requirements, basic aid policies, and pitfalls.
Learning Objective: Participants will gain an understanding of the financial aid process and discuss sample financial aid policies and procedures.

Participants will learn best practices related to the oversight of their schools’ physical plants. This session will cover the basics of facilities management, including custodial and maintenance management, maintenance funding, and oversight of construction projects and renovations.

Numbers on the Runway

Gain valuable insight into budgeting and financial modeling in this hands-on workshop. The session will begin with an exercise in budget management based on linked Excel spreadsheets. Participants will work in small groups to identify the impact of changes in charitable giving, endowment fluctuations, capital spending, and operational issues on the annual budget of a sample school, and discuss the challenge of breaking even.
Learning Objective: Participants will learn one approach to independent school budgeting and financial modeling.

The Critical Drivers of Financial Sustainability

To thrive in the midst of today’s economic challenges and social changes, independent schools must understand and effectively navigate the relationships between tuition discounting practices, total program cost infrastructures, and affordability as measured by the income distribution of markets they serve.
