President
Pat Bassett has been the president of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) since August 2001. He began his career in independent schools in 1970 as an English teacher and lacrosse coach at Woodberry Forrest School and in 1980, became headmaster of Stuart Hall until 1989. Pat became the head of Pomfret School, a coed, boarding-day high school, in 1989. From 1993-2001, he served as president of the Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS).
From 1981-89, Pat served on the Executive Committee of the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS), and he was president from 1988-89. From 1985-89, he served on the board of directors of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and was named a Kellogg National Leadership Fellow in 1986. Pat has served on the board of directors of The Multicultural Alliance (1994-2000), on the board of The Council for Spiritual and Ethical Education (CSEE) since 1996, and on the board of CAPE, the Council for American Private Education, since 2001.
In March 2000, Pat was honored by The Klingenstein Center of Teachers College (Columbia University) with the Educational Leadership Award. In 2001, he was invited by the president of Teachers College to join the Advisory Board of The Klingenstein Center, and he is an adjunct faculty member at Teachers College, Columbia University. In April 2009, The European Council for International Schools recognized Bassett with its annual award for promotion of international education.
Pat is the author and editor of many books and articles, including numerous commentary pieces in Education Week. He is a Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude graduate of Williams College and holds a master's degree from Northwestern University.
Senior Lecturer on Education
Jim Honan has served on the faculty at the Harvard Graduate School of Education since 1991. He is also a faculty member at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and a principal of the Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Harvard University, and has been a faculty member in a number of Harvard's other executive education programs and professional development institutes. Jim is a member of the Board of Trustees of Marist College and the Dana Hall School and previously served as a trustee of Fitchburg State College and the Plan for Social Excellence and as Treasurer of the Child Care Resource Center, Inc.
Jim holds a BA from Marist College, an MA and EdS from George Washington University, and an EdM and EdD from Harvard University.
Director of Consultants
Terry Moore brings 20 years of independent school Board and business operations experience to ISM. Gaining operational expertise from several entrepreneurial ventures, his down-to-earth style, steeped in practical creative advice, comes with much experience. With professional expertise in budgeting, marketing, fundraising, and fiscal oversight, Terry’s rich business knowledge, independent school experience, and professional manner are well suited to the special niche that schools occupy.
Terry has a wealth of experience with independent schools from which he gained practical, creative skills in independent school management. His professional background and not-for-profit Board experience qualify him for consulting with independent schools and their specialized needs. Terry's responsibilities in assisting with the implementation of a start-up school included serving as a Board member and Board officer, and providing support and backing to those occupying both Board and administrative leadership roles.
Terry provides consultations in many areas including Strategic Planning/Strategic Financial Planning, Board Retreats and Workshops, Management Analysis, and Strategic Performance Analyses. Further, he works effectively with Boards, Heads, and senior administrators. He is a leader at the ISM Summer Institute leading various workshops for Trustees, Heads of School, and Business Managers.
Terry earned a BS from East Carolina University (NC). He has served on various nonprofit boards and is active in community affairs.
