Sessions

The program will start with presentations by Pat Bassett, President, NAIS discussing his recent article in Independent School, “The New Normal” and Terry Moore, Director of Consultants, ISM discussing his recent article, posted by NBOA, “Full Speed Ahead”. These two articles by two of the leaders in the independent school industry will provide the framework for the discussion over the following two days for IAFM participants. This is a unique opportunity to hear the thoughts of these leaders and have the opportunity to ask questions about their position on the financial model for independent schools.

Sunday September 26, 2010

1:00 – 2:00 PM Registration
2:00 – 5:00 PM Opening Remarks by Jeffrey Shields, FASAE, CAE, Executive Director, NBOA / Opening Keynote by Pat Bassett, President, NAIS, introductions and discussion
6:00 PM Dinner with a talk by Terry Moore, Director of Consultants, ISM

Learning Objective: Participants will learn the two schools of thoughts on financial sustainability from NAIS and ISM and then have the opportunity to ask questions about their position on the financial model for independent schools.

Monday September 27, 2010

Morning sessions will be led by Jim Honan, Senior Lecturer on Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, MA. Jim Honan has served on the faculty at the Harvard Graduate School of Education since 1991 and is also a faculty member at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and a principal of the Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Harvard University. Jim will provide participants the opportunity to use the Harvard process of “debatable proposition” to discuss the views presented by NAIS and ISM on Sunday and to guide the group in developing the framework for a financial model for independent schools which supports outstanding 21st century education at schools.

The afternoon sessions will allow the individuals and teams from schools to work together with other like schools (boarding day / size / etc.) to more fully develop the ideas generated in the morning sessions.

Learning Objective: Participants will learn how to use the Harvard process of “debatable proposition” to discuss the views presented by NAIS and ISM and then develop the framework for a financial model for independent schools which supports outstanding 21st century education at schools.

Tuesday September 28, 2010

The final sessions will conclude by noon and are intended to take the creative work generated on Monday to develop a framework or set of tools which each of the participant’s schools can use as a guide in developing a sustainable, unique financial model. This framework and tools will then be further developed by NBOA staff and participants and made available to all independent schools.

Learning Objective: Participants will learn how to develop a framework or set of tools that each of their schools can then use as a guide in developing a sustainable, unique financial model.

Earn up to 14.5 CPE credits for IAFM.

NBOA is registered with the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) as a sponsor of continuing professional education on the National Registry of CPE Sponsors. State boards of accountancy have final authority on the acceptance of individual courses for CPE credit.
