Breakout Session A

Tuesday, 10:30 - 11:45 AM

Beyond TTWWADI (That's the Way We've Always Done It)

Ian Jukes

The mind-set for the structure of our schools is based on decisions that were made in the days of the horse and buggy. This is classic TTWWADI (That's The Way We've Always Done It). Most educators embrace entrenched ideas about schools and learning without thinking. However, technology is fueling an engine of change that is making the world a moving target. In this environment of change, it is critical that we begin to question the rationale behind TTWWADI in our schools. In this session, we will discuss the difficulties we face in shifting people's ideas to a new vision for schools and face a fundamental question about the nature of education: Do we prepare students for the world of tomorrow, or the farms and factories of yesterday?

Learning Objective: Business Officers will review the foundational assumptions taken for granted in K-12 education, learn about some of the key areas of technological development that are putting pressure on schools to change, and discuss a number of ways educators must change in order to keep up with a world on the move.

Going Green:
How Independent Schools Can Become Environmentally Friendly Without Breaking the Bank

We will walk through a progression of steps and identify sustainable factors found within most school environments. From elementary to comprehensive footprints, discover how turning your school green impacts bottom line financial considerations. We will examine the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) model through a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Understanding and Tackling Differences at your School:
Diversity Education for the Business Officer

Kate Lindsey, Georgetown Day School

Business Officers are both educators and students, and must work with a wide variety of people. Constituents may represent a wide variety of socio-economic classes, racial groups, religions, cultures, ethnicities, and educational backgrounds. Conversations can be difficult or awkward, and sometimes the greatest obstacle to a successful conversation is lack of knowledge of the other person’s background or fear of saying the wrong thing. It is time to learn how to have serious, deliberate, and meaningful conversations, respecting but not being afraid of differences. This session will provide working strategies to better understand, work with, and communicate with the various constituents served by business officers.

Learning Objective: Business Officers will discuss how to work and communicate with people from diverse backgrounds.

What the Heck is an EEO-1 Report, and Do I Need to Complete It?

Caryn Pass, Venable LLP

The EEO-1 Report – known formally as the “Employer Information Report” – is a government form requiring many employers to provide a count of their employees by job category and then by ethnicity, race, and gender. The EEO-1 report is submitted to both the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission and the Department of Labor. In the past, many independent schools thought they were exempt from filing this report. However, the EEOC recently affirmed that all employers who employ 100 or more employees must file. This session will cover compliance issues and proper completion of the report.

Learning Objective: Business Officers will learn the requirements for and how to complete the EEO-1 report.
